Travelling With Your Pets

When traveling internationally with pets, it’s crucial to understand the specific requirements for their health, safety, and legal entry into the destination country. Different countries have varying regulations regarding vaccinations, parasite protection, quarantine procedures, and microchipping. Failing to meet these requirements can result in delays, denied entry, or even the need to return your pet to their home country. Properly preparing your pet ensures a smoother travel experience and minimizes stress for both you and your furry companion. Being informed also helps protect your pet from diseases or conditions that may not be common in your home country. You may also want to stock up on any medications and/or supplements that your pet is on to ensure that you don’t run out while out of the country.

It is important to note that while veterinarians and clinics can provide the necessary health documentation, it is ultimately the pet owner’s responsibility to ensure they are aware of and comply with these requirements

Travelling to the US with your dog:

Because Canada is considered a rabies-free/low-risk country, the current requirements (as of November 27, 2024) are as follows:

  1. Dogs must appear healthy on arrival
  2. Dogs must be at least 6 months old at time of entry/return to US
  3. Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them
  4. CDC Dog Import Form Receipt (this form is free and can be accessed online)
  5. An up to date rabies vaccine ( *this is required to get back into Canada)

Please visit https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/rabies-free-low-risk-countries.html to access the CDC Dog Import Form, and to follow any updates to the regulations.

Also be sure to check the requirements for the specific state you are travelling to, as requirements can vary state to state.
